About The Tree Genie

Helping families uncover their roots with care, curiosity, and respect.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. My journey as a personal genealogy researcher began long before I turned it into a profession. Family history has always been part of my life — passed down through generations of women who understood the importance of remembering where we come from.

Chelsea.

Where It All Began

My great-grandmother was the first to document our family tree. She created it entirely by hand, relying on her own memories and knowledge of our relatives. Long before online records and digital archives were available, she carefully preserved our family connections on paper.

After she passed away, I asked if I could continue the work she had started. Carrying on her research felt like both a privilege and a responsibility.

As research tools evolved and more records became accessible, I began expanding the tree further — tracing both my paternal and maternal lines and verifying the details that had once relied solely on memory.

One discovery that deeply inspired me was learning of a distant connection to Dame Darcey Bussell. At the time, I was studying ballet at school, so the connection felt especially meaningful. It was one of the first moments that made family history feel personal and alive.

Turning Curiosity Into Purpose

My paternal grandmother has always been the keeper of family photographs and newspaper clippings. I spent many afternoons sitting with her, looking through old images and articles, listening to the stories behind them. Those moments taught me that genealogy is not just about records — it’s about people.

As my research skills grew, my grandmother asked for help finding a cousin she had not spoken to since childhood. Through an online search group, I connected with a wonderful researcher named Junette, who guided and encouraged me. Together, we were able to locate the cousin my grandmother had lost touch with.

That experience changed everything.

Encouraged to continue, I later helped my best friend Ian (adoptive name) search for his birth mother. After careful research and DNA confirmation, contact was successfully made. It was an incredibly emotional and life-changing experience — one that reinforced how powerful ethical, patient research can be.

A Personal Commitment

Part of my decision to pursue genealogy more seriously was shaped by Junette’s encouragement and our shared passion for helping others reconnect with their families. She was generous with her knowledge and deeply committed to supporting those searching for answers.

After her unexpected passing, I felt even more strongly about continuing this work — not only as a personal passion, but as a way of honouring the encouragement and kindness she showed me.

Her belief in helping families find clarity and connection is something I carry with me in every project I undertake.
